The FUSHA/Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)

Modern Standard Arabic is rooted in Classical Arabic. Classical Arabic is also the language of the Qur’an as well as the language of all Arab historic and religious texts. Modern Standard Arabic is the primary form of the Arabic language that is spoken and studied today. It can be written and spoken and there is no difference between the written and the spoken form. In its written form, MSA is the language of literature and media (books, newspapers, street signs, shops signs etc…)

The spoken form is the language used on television, in the government and parliament and on official occasions (conferences, seminars etc…) When someone is learning Arabic, they are learning Modern Standard Arabic. While there are many dialects of Arabic that are spoken throughout the Middle East and Africa, Modern Standard Arabic is the foundational language upon which each dialect is based.

If one lives in the Middle East, Horn of Africa, or North Africa (or is planning on visiting, relocating, conducting business, etc.) Modern Standard Arabic would be the language of choice.

Even if you are studying a regional dialect, it will serve you well to learn as much Modern Standard Arabic as possible. If nothing else, it will assist in traveling and meeting new people. Even among Arabic speaking people, Modern Standard Arabic is what unites speakers of various dialects.

Our FUSHA / MSA program is suitable for students who are interested to learn FUSHA / MSA regardless their levels. For the MSA program, we depend two main curriculums: Silsilat Allisaan Series and “Al Kitaab Fi Ta’allum Al Arabiya” by Georgetown University Press. MSA program at Al-Baher is divided into four levels: (Beginner– Pre-intermediate–Intermediate and Advanced) these courses ensure a smooth transmission for the students starting from the beginner level up to the advanced level according to the standards of the common European framework of reference for languages (CEFR).These two curriculums have proved to be very successful and effective in meeting the students` needs at all levels. The time it takes to complete a full level is 12 weeks.

Through our long experience with students who managed to reach to the Intermediate and the Advanced levels in MSA, we noticed that there are always keen to improve their reading and analytical capabilities. Therefore, the material that we prepared for this level aims at helping the students achieving their goals in strengthening their reading skills. For this level, we prepared our own special book for this stage. Our book is called (The Arabic Reading Book) this book consists of recent and authentic reading texts from a wide variety of sources. The organization of the texts in this book is designed in a way to enhance both students` reading and comprehensive skills. Each text is accompanied by a vocabulary list, through reading and analyzing the various texts and articles in the book, students will get plenty of practice on understanding and comprehending vocabulary. This book will help them to master reading for main ideas, summarize texts, make outlines, remember facts and figures and many more other skills. Before they know it their reading skill will become stronger and their comprehension ability will improve!

The textbook is composed of five modules organized by the following topics:

Politics, Economy, Social & Technology, Environment and Miscellaneous.

Each module will give the students the opportunities to learn and practice a number of specific vocabularies and terminologies related to each topic; it will also help them to improve their analytic and translation skills and to expand their reading and speaking capabilities.
